KenGen Targets Threefold Increase in Renewable Energy Capacity to 5,500 Megawatts

Posted on : Tuesday, 30th June 2026

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company has set forth plans to expand its renewable energy development pipeline to 5,500 megawatts. This new objective is more than threefold the 1,500 megawatts outlined in its previous G2G 2034 Strategy. The organization presently has an installed capacity of 1,786 megawatts. This capacity encompasses hydropower, geothermal, thermal, and wind energy sources.

Managing Director Peter Njenga stated that the recalibration signifies adjustments in the operating environment. The heightened ambition has been propelled by new opportunities, national priorities, and the rising regional demand for clean energy.

KenGen stated that it is working towards a financing plan of $4.3 billion derived from its original strategy. The enlarged pipeline will be supported by a blend of concessional funding, public-private partnerships, bonds, special purpose vehicles, and equity assurance. The organization is advancing its plans to implement 500 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage systems. These systems will enhance grid stability as additional intermittent renewable sources are integrated into the national network.

In the six months leading up to December 2025, KenGen raised its electricity generation to 7,805 gigawatt-hours, an increase from 7,210 gigawatt-hours during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Kenya aims to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity generation by the year 2030. KenGen's development plan features substantial increases in geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind energy, in addition to 2,000 megawatts of nuclear power. The energy producer stated that there has been an increase in investor confidence regarding renewable energy. It anticipates that the enhanced plan will aid in Kenya's sustainable economic transformation.

KenGen manages the majority of the nation's geothermal and hydropower resources. Its initiatives at Olkaria and various other locations have established it as a frontrunner in clean energy across the continent. The most recent announcement arrives amid a growing demand for electricity. The company stated its dedication to supporting Kenya's development through dependable and sustainable energy generation.
